Naushad Ali to exhibit at the International Fashion Showcase at London Fashion Week 2019

He will also attend talent development program by London College of Fashion and Somerset House

Last year, IMG Reliance curated an installation along with five emerging designers titled ‘Indian Pastoralists’ that won the Best Country Award for India at the International Fashion Showcase (IFS) 2017. IMG Reliance will be once again boosting emerging designer talent in India by giving designer Naushad Ali the opportunity to exhibit at IFS from 11-25 February 2019. Naushad Ali has been selected as one of the 16 finalists for the first edition of IFS biennale at London Fashion Week in 2019 along with a designer residency in 2018 supported by London College of Fashion and Somerset House.

Says Jaspreet Chandok, Vice President and Head of Fashion, IMG Reliance, “The win at IFS last year reaffirmed the fact that India is creating some of the most exciting young designer talent. International showcases such as IFS provide a great platform and we hold in great esteem our continually enhancing relationship with the British Council.”

The International Fashion Showcase (IFS) nurtures and presents work from the finest up-and-coming fashion talent from around the world. The biennial fashion presentation is a partnership between the British Council, British Fashion Council, London College of Fashion, UAL and Somerset House.

For London Fashion Week February 2019, the showcase has a new format. For the first time, 16 selected designers from across the globe will showcase a series of compelling installations to represent their respective country.

Naushad Ali is a designer with minimalist inclinations, he believes in revisiting designs to adapt more than to add. He fosters a deep love towards Indian traditions and crafts, creating designs that bring together modern cuts and heritage fabrics. He challenges himself with design opportunities and techniques as he endeavours to exceed expectation through every collection. He believes in reliving the history of a culture by reviving its traditional fabrics and sustaining its practitioners.

After graduating from NIFT Chennai and working in the fashion industry for a while, he made his way to Auroville. Setting up Studio Liam in 2014, he created a design line that would transfer the expertise of Indian craftsmen to contemporary fashion. The label endeavours to balance the inspiration of India and its history, in all its forms, while  keeping a keen eye on the world of today. At his studio in Auroville, every garment is designed, tailored and packed with earnest dedication.

Says Naushad Ali, “I am looking forward to having a great learning experience through IFS. I thank IMG Reliance for giving me the opportunity to explore a new market and improve both my design and business skills under IFS mentorship.  I believe IFS will also give me an opportunity to meet like-minded designers from throughout the world who have sustainability as their core brand value.  We are a young label who constantly look for new opportunities and challenge ourselves. IFS comes at the right time for me and my team to learn and grow in the international market. India won the best display award at IFS last year which made us all so proud and that adds more excitement and challenge.”

The 16 represented countries are: Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, India, Georgia, Italy, Kenya, Lebanon, Lithuania, Netherlands, Rwanda, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Uruguay and Vietnam.

The free exhibition is a key part of London Fashion Week, giving both the public and industry professionals the opportunity to discover emerging fashion from four continents: Africa, America, Asia and Europe and to celebrate its global relevance. The collections presented offer a balanced mix of womenswear and menswear exploring topical but universally shared issues and present new ideas and solutions that are shaping fashion globally.

In another first, these designers will be supported through a bespoke online programme, developed by London College of Fashion, UAL, which will cover all aspects of business development from brand to sales to fashion and sustainability. They will also travel to London this August to attend a two week talent development programme, ahead of the February 2019 exhibition. This tailored cultural residency and business skills training will give the emerging designers the professional support that is often difficult to access, provided by some of the UK’s leading fashion and creative experts.

The designers will spend one week immersed in the creative community of Somerset House Studios where they will be supported by a range of studio artists whose skills and expertise range from ethical fashion, sustainability to tech. Another week will be spent with experts from London College of Fashion, UAL reviewing their business and brand development goals. During both residencies, the designers will explore, test and develop a series of collaborations and creative projects that will form part of their installations in February’s exhibition, and be given important insights into all aspects of business from branding and communications to sales.

Says Niamh Tuft, Programme Manager, British Council, “We are delighted that Naushad Ali has been selected in International Fashion Showcase 2019. It continues the story of sustainability and craftsmanship that IMG Reliance explored so well during their award-winning 2017 exhibition. The showcase is a key part of London Fashion Week, giving the public, press and buyers the chance to discover fashion from all over the world. We are excited to support Naushad to develop his creative business skills, with insights from fellow professionals in the UK fashion and culture sectors.”

In recognition of the participants' creativity and innovation, an award will be presented to one designer during London Fashion Week February 2019. The winner will be decided by a panel of cultural and commercial fashion experts chaired by Sarah Mower MBE, BFC Ambassador for Emerging Talent and Chief Critic Vogue US; the same panel that selected the 16 designers earlier this year.
